Get Permission Karemore: Preserving Eklavya’s approach of mastering skills: Self-directed learning

Scientifically, Self- directed learning (SDL) is a process which allows learners to take control of the process of learning. This process of learning involves the identification of the goals, selection of strategies for effective learning and then followed by evaluation of learning performance and outcome. SDL helps to develop independent learning skills, increased responsibility, assertiveness and accountability among students which are key attributes to a Medical Professionals’ career.

Learning is a lifelong process, especially in the field of health education. The adaptability to various methods of learning is possible if students are trained for identification of goals and preparation for better outcomes. The process of SDL help for this capacity building and therefore needs to be incorporated during budding years of undergarduation and postgraduation. Although, mastering this approach of learning is practiced at many institutes across the country, few institutes at remote places or having lack of resources could not witness the benefits of it. Hence, it’s a need of an hour to sensitise faculty and students for SDL before its implementation in curriculum.

Propagation, reinforcement and application of SDL would be the best approach to cherish the learning attitude of ‘Eklavya’ - the hero of our mythological stories.

Happy Learning!!
